Arm Lift

Arm Lift (Brachioplasty)

After a significant weight loss, or as part of the aging process, the skin along the underside of the upper arm often becomes loose and flabby in what is commonly called a “batwing” appearance. Exercise and weight training can build muscle tone, however it cannot remove excess skin or weakened tissues. The only way to remove excess skin on the underarm is through a brachioplasty (arm lift surgery). A procedure called an Arm Lift, or Brachioplasty, will restore the upper under arm to a firmer, more youthful looking appearance.

During an Arm Lift procedure, Dr. Gonzalez reshapes and recontours the supporting tissues, removes excess skin and fat to restore a more youthful appearance.  In cases where a small amount of excess skin is to be removed, Dr. Gonzalez will perform a Mini Arm Lift instead.

Am I A Candidate for an Arm Lift procedure?

  • You are in good overall health
  • You have an extra skin along the underside of your upper arms
  • You do not smoke
  • You have realistic expectations

The Procedure

An Arm Lift procedure is performed under general anesthesia.  The incision will range in length depending upon the extent of the skin and fat to be removed.  In extreme cases, the incision is made beginning at the arm pit and terminating at the elbow and runs along the inner aspect of the upper arm.  Dr. Gonzalez will then remove the excess skin and fat and adjust the underlying supporting tissues to restore tone.  The incision is then sutured beneath the skin’s surface to minimize scarring.

In milder cases, Dr. Gonzalez may perform a Mini Arm Lift where the incision is limited to the arm pit and upper arm.  In either case, Dr. Gonzalez will make the incision in locations that are less noticeable.

Dr. Gonzalez will then close the incisions with absorbable sutures, which are buried below the skin’s surface.

Recovery

Generally, it takes one to two weeks to regain normal function of your arms and hands. Patients often require strong pain medication during much of that time and usually need to take one to two weeks off from their normal activities.

When an Arm Lift procedure is combined with extensive liposuction, Dr. Gonzalez recommends that his patients wear a compression garment for one to two weeks following surgery.

Dr. Gonzalez will be happy to personally consult with you to help you determine the best treatment plan to achieve your desired results.
