Excess fat deposits, loose skin, and lax muscles in the abdominal area can occur due to a sedentary lifestyle, heredity factors, pregnancy, or other reasons. Sagging skin in the abdomen may also occur after a major weight loss. It can be difficult to correct this condition only with diet and exercise.
This is where abdominoplasty or tummy tuck cosmetic surgery can prove to be a highly effective procedure to restore a flatter and smoother abdominal contour. A skilled surgeon can reshape and re-contour the waist region by excising surplus skin and fat and tightening the loose abdominal muscles.
Envy Aesthetic Center, led by board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Marco Gonzalez, provides tummy tuck surgery to patients in El Paso, TX, and surrounding communities.
Candidacy
If you are experience one or more of the following issues, tummy tuck plastic surgery could be a suitable procedure for you:
- Skin laxity in the lower or upper abdominal area
- Loose skin and fatty deposits have occurred after pregnancy
- Excessively loose and hanging skin following bariatric surgery
- Separated and weak abdominal muscles, which have not improved with muscle toning exercises
Surgical Procedure
Tummy tuck surgery is usually performed with the patient under general anesthesia, but IV sedation may be used in some cases. After you have been placed under anesthesia, your surgeon will begin the procedure by creating a horizontal incision in the area between the pubic hairline and the navel. The length and shape of the incision will depend on the customized surgical plan made in accordance with the amount of skin and fat to be removed.
Your surgeon will tighten the loose or weak underlying muscles through the incision, and excise surplus skin, tissue and fat to create a flatter and more youthful stomach contour. A second incision may be necessary if you also have excess skin in the upper abdominal area. Once the procedure is completed, your surgeon will close the wounds with sutures.
The procedure will help you achieve a firmer and attractive abdominal contour that is proportionate to your body size, shape, and weight. Mild bruising and swelling will occur after your surgery, which will resolve over the next few weeks. You can expect to resume your regular routine within 10 to 14 days after your tummy tuck surgery.
Partial Tummy tuck
In some cases, the skin around the abdomen may have become loose, but the underlying abdominal muscles may still be fairly tight and elastic. In this situation, your surgeon may recommend only a partial tummy tuck surgery or a mini abdominoplasty. This procedure will remove excess skin and fat from your lower abdominal area, and will involve just one incision.
Recovery in a partial tummy tuck surgery will be faster and the subsequent scarring will be reduced. This less invasive technique to perform tummy tuck is often used when you have developed loose mid-section skin following weight loss, or you are seeking revision surgery following your primary abdominoplasty.
