Microsurgery
The body requires reconstruction in some cases. This is when the body cannot heal in a standard way after an injury or a trauma. Reconstruction may be necessary even after a surgery that entails the removal of essential tissues. Your cosmetic surgery may recommend microsurgery when you have missing tissue that is vital for the body’s appearance and functioning.
Envy Aesthetic Center, led by board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Marco Gonzalez, provides microsurgery for wound care to patients in El Paso, TX, and surrounding communities.
Basics of Microsurgery
Microsurgery is a form of reconstructive surgery which allows the surgeon to remove tissue from one body area and place to on another part of the body. This is a useful procedure since the part requiring reconstruction may not have adequate tissue nearby.
The surgery requires donor tissue which can be placed at the recipient site. This is that part of the body which requires reconstruction. Surgeons often require a microscope for operating on blood vessels to make sure the surgery is successful when the donor tissue is not close to the recipient site.
Purpose of Reconstructive Microsurgery
Reconstructive microsurgery may be required in the following situations:
- Severe infections
- Surgery that removes cancerous tumors
- Severe traumatic injury
Reconstructive microsurgery may be required for several reasons, including a wound that needs to be surgically closed or is too large. It may be required in an area where different types of tissue, such as muscle and bone or skin and muscle are needed. This type of surgery can be essential in saving a leg or an arm from amputation. It can also restore function to the damaged leg or arm.
Provides High Precision
Microsurgery, in the broadest sense, refers to a plastic surgery that is performed under a microscope. Microsurgery has far greater precision as compared to reconstructive and plastic surgery. It has expanded the range of procedures which can be safely and effectively performed.
Microsurgery greatly improves the surgeon’s ability to transplant large tissue sections from donor sites to recipient sites or reattach amputated fingers by using special operating microscopes.
Transplanted tissue doesn’t die in the new location since the surgeon uses the power of the operating microscope to carefully move nerves and blood vessels from the donor site (in a procedure called flap) to the recipient site. This allows feeling to persist in the transplanted tissue.
Microsurgery can be used for reconstructing breasts, reattaching fingers, or performing reconstructive cosmetic surgery on scalps, noses, ears, fingers, hands, and toes among other small body parts. It is also used in complex trauma and cancer cases.
Recovery and Results
Goal of a reconstructive microsurgery are:
- Limb preservation
- Restoring limb function
For instance, in the leg it means preserving weight-bearing function, while in the arms, it refers to motion and strength. Treatment doesn’t end when you leave the hospital. Your treatment will end when the area has maximized functionality. Rehabilitation will begin once you are discharged from the hospital.
