Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy allows doctors to accelerate healing in various body areas. The treatment has potential to help with hair restoration and growth as well. Typically, the treatment is used by doctors in treating hair loss as a result of androgenetic alopecia. This is a common condition that makes the hair follicles shrink in size. This condition is also known as male/female pattern baldness.
PRP is a relatively new approach to hair restoration. However, there is scientific evidence suggesting that it can promote growth of hair. Envy Aesthetic Center, led by board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Marco Gonzalez, provides platelet rich plasma (PRP) hair restoration therapy for the improvement of a thinning hairline or bald patches to patients in El Paso, TX, and surrounding locations.
PRP Injection Therapy in Treating Thinning Hair Line and Bald Patches
You need to know the role played by platelets in healing to understand the way PRP works. Platelets are found in the blood along with white and red blood cells. In fact, they are the body’s first responders when a person sustains a wound or cut. They arrive for stopping bleeding and promoting healing.
Researchers hypothesized that they could accelerate healing by extracting concentrating platelets and injecting them into damaged body areas. A medical professional will take your blood sample and put it through a centrifuge for producing PRP. This machine spins rapidly for separating the different blood components. The medical professional will extract platelets into an injection.
There are a range of growth factors and proteins in PRP for speeding up tissue repair. Initially, researchers theorized that PRP may be helpful in regrowing hair by reversing the cause of androgenic alopecia. This is usually because of damage to hair follicles. PRP has become a popular approach to restoring hair growth since then.
Procedure for PRP Injections
These steps are usually present in a PRP treatment for hair loss:
- Your blood will be drawn from the arm by a medical professional
- The blood sample will be placed in a centrifuge for separating components
- Platelets will be extracted using a syringe
- Platelets will be injected into targeted scalp areas
The entire process doesn’t take over an hour. You should be able to resume your regular activities without any restrictions.
Duration of PRP Therapy
You may require multiple PRP treatments for maintaining results of hair growth. Your individual condition and results of the initial treatment will determine the number of PRP sessions you require. The treatment provider may suggest maintenance injections once every 3 – 6 months for keeping the hair loss under control.
Is PRP Therapy Effective?
A team of researchers, in 2019, carried out a systematic review of available research on PRP therapy for hair loss. The findings were published in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery journal. Ultimately, the analysis focused on 11 research papers that involved 262 participants experiencing androgenic alopecia.
Majority of studies, as per the authors, found PRP injections to reduce hair loss and increase the density of hair growth and hair diameter. Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Marco Gonzalez of the Envy Aesthetic Center receives patients from El Paso, TX, and nearby areas for platelet rich plasma (PRP) hair restoration injection therapy to improve a thinning hair line and bald patches.
