Hand Surgery

Typically, hand surgery involves the repair of injured tendons or joints, removal of diseased tissue, joint fusion, and joint replacement. Cosmetic surgery may be performed for restoring the hand’s natural appearance. Rehabilitation programs generally follow the surgery for enabling the patient to reuse their hand normally.

During the pre-operative consultation, your surgeon will educate you on the various steps involved in the surgery. Patients tend to feel confident when they know the things to expect. Procedure steps can differ based on the type of hand reconstructive surgery or hand plastic surgery that needs performing.

Hand anatomy is complex, which makes it vital to choose a qualified and experienced surgeon with a proven track record of performance in different types of hand surgery procedures. Envy Aesthetic Center, led by board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Marco Gonzalez, provides hand surgery procedures to patients in El Paso, TX, and surrounding locations.

Anesthesia

Hand related cosmetic surgery or hand surgery can be performed under general anesthesia. This may be performed by a nurse anesthetist or an anesthesiologist. The professional will be present throughout in the surgery room. Few patients may not need more than regional anesthetic. In such cases, a local anesthetic injection will be administered in the arm for numbing the area. The surgery may last anywhere from 1 to 2 hours.

Hand Surgery

Once you are under anesthesia, your surgeon will begin the hand surgery procedure. If your hand requires the removal of diseased tissue, a synovectomy procedure may be performed. Bones that are partially destroyed due to arthritis may also be removed. In case your wrist tendons are ruptured, tendon transfer surgery may be performed along with the hand surgery.

You may require joint replacement surgery in you suffer from painful joints. Generally, artificial joints made of synthetic material are used for replacing the damaged joint. Joint fusion is another treatment option available in certain cases. This involves the removal of joint and stimulating bone growth. It also involves building a solid bone segment. Autologous bone grafting with tissue may be involved in this along with metal plates and pins.

Hospital Stay

You may not require hospital stay for minor hand surgery. You may be able to go back to your home the same day. In complex cases, overnight hospital stay may be required. This is because you would need to be given IV fluids for hydration. You will also receive analgesic medication that is adjusted to your pain level.

Hospital Discharge

You are likely to be discharged with a splint to restrict your motions. You may be asked to keep your hand in a raised position for mitigating swelling. You will be given oral medications if you are ready for discharge. Your surgeon will let you know about follow-up appointments. It is possible that you may need 5 to 6 weeks of outpatient therapy for complete rehabilitation.

Physical Therapy

You may require physical therapy at least once or twice every week for up to six weeks. Therapy would begin in a week or two once the swelling subsides. Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Marco Gonzalez receives patients from El Paso, TX, and nearby areas for hand surgery.
