Breast augmentation is a popular procedure for women who wish to enhance or restore their breasts following pregnancy. While breast augmentation is an exciting journey for new mothers, there are a few considerations to keep in mind before undergoing surgery. Board certified plastics surgeon Dr. Marco Gonzalez provides breast augmentation surgery to patients in El Paso, TX, and surrounding locations.
Why do my breasts look different after pregnancy?
Pregnancy can put a woman’s body through many changes, specifically in the abdomen and breasts. Following pregnancy and breastfeeding, women often experience loss of volume in the breasts which can lead to a sagging, deflated appearance. This occurs because the breasts produce a denser tissue during lactation, which can stretch the skin and leave behind a deflated look once you are no longer breastfeeding.
When is the best time to get breast implants after pregnancy?
It is best to wait until you are done breastfeeding your children before seeking breast augmentation. Ideally, you should wait until about six months after you have finished lactating so the breasts can return to their resting state and your expected results from surgery will be more reliable. If you are planning to lose a substantial amount of weight following childbirth, you will also want to do that before undergoing breast augmentation. Being close to your ideal weight will help you choose implants that are proportionate to your body and helps reduce the chance of the skin sagging more following weight loss.
Will I need a breast lift?
When your breast implants are placed, it is ideal for the nipple to be as centered over the implant as possible. If there is too much sagging skin for the implant to raise, a breast lift may be recommended in addition to implants for you to achieve best results. One indication that you may benefit from a breast lift is if your nipple rests beneath the natural fold under your breast.
Schedule a Consultation
If you’re unsure if it is the right time to undergo breast augmentation, schedule a consultation to have an exam and discuss your goals. Your surgeon will be able to provide you with a more accurate timeline of when you’re eligible for surgery, as well as help you pick implants that are best suited for your body.
