Breast Revision Surgery

Generally, breast augmentation has some of the highest satisfaction rates of any cosmetic surgery procedure, with countless patients ecstatic with their results. However, in certain cases, breast augmentation results do not turn out the way the patient expects. Others are happy with their results initially, only to experience an unexpected issue that affects the appearance or physical comfort of their breasts. In either of these unfortunate circumstances, a breast revision procedure is necessary to remedy the issue.

Plastic surgery is about achieving your goals to feel better about yourself, which is why Dr. Gonzalez has spent years perfecting breast revision techniques to provide beautiful, satisfying results to his secondary breast augmentation patients.

What Is Breast Revision?

Occasionally, a breast augmentation can produce unsatisfactory results. Breast revision, or revision breast augmentation, is a cosmetic procedure that is performed to correct the problems that can develop with an implant, such as:

  • Improper size
  • Excessive firmness
  • Wrinkling
  • Implant rupture
  • Capsular contracture
  • Shifting of position
  • Implant rejection

Patients who are interested in breast revision may have received an undesirable result due to the inexperience of a prior surgeon, poor healing, or damage to the implant. Other patients may have lived successfully with their implants for years, only to decide that the size, projection, or material no longer suits their aesthetic taste.

No matter the reason, the goal of breast revision is to change, update, or remedy current breasts implants to improve the appearance and comfort for the betterment of the patient.  Dr. Gonzalez will be happy to consult with you personally to determine the ideal treatment plan for your situation.

If you’re interested in a breast revision surgery and would like to see if you may be a candidate, call Dr. G. Plastic Surgery today at (915) 600-2639 to schedule a consultation with Dr. Gonzalez.

Am I a Candidate for Breast Revision?

If you dislike the look of your breast implants, they are causing you discomfort, or you have experienced a rupture, you may be a candidate for breast implant revision. Candidates for breast implant revision may also desire to change the size, shape, or material of their breast implants. Any of these reasons can make you a good candidate for breast implant revision. Additionally, candidates should:

  • Be generally in good health
  • Not smoke or be willing to quit
  • Have reasonable expectations of results
  • Want to change or update a previous breast augmentation

If you think you need a breast implant revision, or you are unhappy with the results of your breast augmentation, Dr. Gonzalez can help. To see if you’re a good candidate, call Dr. G Plastic Surgery today at (915) 600-2639 to schedule a consultation.

How Is Breast Revision Performed?

Since each situation is different, the treatment plan for a breast revision must be individualized for each person. The nature of your specific surgical plan will depend on your goals for the procedure, as well as the state of your current breast implants. Your case may require a combination of the following techniques, including:

Replacing the Implant

This is one of the more common goals of a breast implant revision, as even successful breast augmentations require replacing implants after about 10-15 years. Patients may also desire an increase or decrease in size, a change of material or shape, or any other combination of changes to better suit their frame, aesthetic, or lifestyle.

In cases where there are no structural issues with the implant or breast pocket (space between the breast tissue and the muscle where the implant is placed), Dr. Gonzalez will make incisions–if possible, along the same scars as the original procedure–and carefully remove the old implants. Then, he will place the new implants in the breast pocket, ensuring they fit properly and look aesthetically pleasing. He will then carefully close the incisions.

Capsulectomy

Any time a foreign object (such as a breast implant, pacemaker, etc.) is placed in the body, the body reacts by forming scar tissue to contain and protect it. The capsule of scar tissue that surrounds the breast implant also helps to keep the implant in place, preventing slippage. However, in some patients, their body’s response to the implant is more severe, resulting in an excess of scar tissue that begins to constrict the implants, causing them to feel hard to the touch and physically painful for the patient. This is capsular contracture, and it can cause the implants to become misshapen, lumpy, painful, and hard.

Dr. Gonzalez can remedy this issue by removing the scar tissue in a procedure called a capsulectomy. A capsulectomy may be performed alone or prior to an implant exchange procedure.

Internal Suturing

In some cases, the breast implants have moved within the breast pocket, resulting in an asymmetrical or uneven appearance. If the implant is otherwise stable and in good condition, Dr. Gonzalez can secure it in the breast capsule with internal sutures.

Explantation

Some women decide that they simply do not want their implants anymore, in which case, Dr. Gonzalez can remove them completely. Depending on the patient’s preferences and skin laxity, he may also recommend pairing an explantation with a breast lift.

How Can I Prepare for Breast Revision?

Breast implant revision is a unique procedure in that the consultation serves as a point for Dr. Gonzalez to decide on the techniques to be used rather than discussing if a patient needs the procedure. During this meeting, you will have an opportunity to discuss your goals for the procedure, along with any concerns you may have and, more notably, any issues you are facing with your current implants. Having an honest discussion with Dr. Gonzalez is crucial, as it allows him to understand what he may encounter during the procedure itself. Then he can prepare accordingly to give you the best possible result. He will also take some time to discuss the risks and benefits of breast implant revision so you are fully informed of the procedure.

Once you have decided this is the procedure for you, Dr. Gonzalez will create an individualized surgical plan, and you can begin making preparations for your procedure. He will provide you with more detailed instructions, but you can expect something similar to the following:

  • To stop or pause certain medications, supplements, or vitamins that can cause bleeding or affect healing
  • To quit smoking
  • To get lab testing, diagnostics, or further physical examinations, as needed

It’s also helpful to have a recovery plan in place. On the day of surgery, you will be required to have a responsible driver take you home. You cannot drive because you will be recovering from anesthesia. You may also need someone to stay with you the first night. It’s also helpful to prepare your home for your recovery period, plan meals ahead of time, find childcare if needed, and schedule time off work.

What Is Recovery From Breast Revision Like?

Breast revision is not a standardized procedure, as Dr. Gonzalez will approach the procedure differently for each patient. There are many factors that go into this surgery, including the type of technique used, the quality of the old implants, and the quality of the surrounding tissue and skin. As such, each patient’s breast revision recovery period will vary greatly, accounting for the above factors as well as the individual healing process.

You may be given a compression garment or surgical bra to aid in the healing process and to keep swelling to a minimum. If your procedure is more complex, necessitating a capsulectomy and an implant replacement, for example, you may experience more bruising or discomfort than others. It really depends on the nature of your procedure and your body’s natural healing process.

Dr. Gonzalez will give you specific instructions that pertain to your case, but most patients will need to take some time off work, limit physical activity for a few weeks, and wear their surgical bras for an extended period of time.

What Results Can I Expect After Breast Revision?

The intended result is a more satisfactory, more symmetrical breast appearance and a more positive self-image. The results of your breast revision procedure will also increase your physical comfort, eliminating prior issues with scar tissue or malposition. Patients who undergo a breast implant revision are much happier overall, having worked with Dr. Gonzalez to create a breast augmentation result that suits their aesthetic and physical goals.

How Much Does Breast Revision Cost?

The cost of breast revision in El Paso, TX, depends on several factors, such as the complexity of the procedure, the level of necessary revision, the cost of new implants, and whether you have combined your breast revision with another procedure, such as a breast lift.

After your consultation with Dr. Gonzalez, he will create an individualized plan for you and will be happy to provide you with an accurate cost estimate.
