Dermabrasion And Microdermabrasion Treatments

Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion And Microdermabrasion TreatmentsDermabrasion and microdermabrasion are both safe and time-tested non-surgical procedures to provide skin rejuvenation without cosmetic surgery. Dermabrasion is relatively more invasive than microdermabrasion, and it may be recommended in certain cases, depending on your aesthetic needs.

Envy Aesthetic Center, led by board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Marco Gonzalez, provides dermabrasion and microdermabrasion to patients in El Paso, TX, and surrounding communities.

Procedure Overview

In dermabrasion, your cosmetic surgeon will create controlled micro wounds in the skin with the help of an abrasion tool. As the skin heals after the treatment, it will produce noticeable improvement in the skin appearance. Dermabrasion is highly effective if you wish to achieve significant improvement to aging or scarred skin without involving surgery.

While in most cases, dermabrasion is used for facial rejuvenation your surgeon may sometimes recommend it for other body areas as well. The key is to work with a skilled surgeon with proper training and experience in this procedure.

Microdermabrasion is a less intensive technique to achieve skin rejuvenation in multiple areas of the body, including the face. The surgeon will use vacuum suction or a micro-abrasive tool to gently remove the topmost skin layer. This mild cosmetic procedure does not require general anesthesia or IV sedation. No deep penetration into the skin tissue is involved, but the results can be significant.

Candidacy for these Procedures

Dermabrasion procedure can help you achieve skin renewal through wound creation in the deeper skin layers. Once the wound healing is complete, new skin will appear which will be thicker, smoother, and more radiant. If you are seeking substantial reduction in your facial signs of aging, scars from surgery or acne, actinic keratoses, rhinophyma (reddish nose) and tattoos, you could be a candidate for dermabrasion procedure.

Microdermabrasion, on the other hand, focuses only on the superficial layer of the skin, which is clinically called the stratum corneum. Dead and damaged skin cells as well as toxins and debris are primarily found in this layer. If you are looking for a less invasive skin rejuvenation option, you may choose microdermabrasion. However, if you have active acne, untreated infection or a skin disease, you may not be a candidate for it.

How is the Treatment Performed?

Dermabrasion may be performed using local anesthesia and mild sedation, but sometimes even general anesthesia may be used. Following anesthesia, your surgeon will apply the abrasive device on the treatment site. The device has a rapidly rotating brush or wire wheel that is encrusted with tiny crystals or an abrasive screen.

In case of microdermabrasion, your treatment provider will use a special device to spray an inert crystalline substance on the affected areas with controlled velocity. The crystal encrusted want will rub against the skin to create exfoliation in the upper layers of the skin, but causing no damage to the deeper tissue.

Recovery and Results

Results with dermabrasion can be more dramatic and longer lasting compared to microdermarbrasion skin rejuvenation. However, the recovery time for dermabrasion is also longer, and you may need about one week for your initial healing to be completed. Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Marco Gonzalez receives patients from El Paso, TX, and nearby areas for dermabrasion and microdermabrasion.
