Revision Rhinoplasty Surgery
If you have a vision for how you’d like to look, and it hasn’t worked out yet, your dreams don’t have to be deferred, merely delayed. Undergoing cosmetic surgery only to experience an undesirable result can be quite heartbreaking. Aside from the time, money, and pain associated with surgery and recovery, disliking your result is disappointing, to say the least! Far too many patients experience this with rhinoplasty, as inexperienced surgeons, poor healing, and unsatisfactory technique can result in a subpar outcome.
Revision rhinoplasty gives you another chance at the result you initially wanted. With an experienced and compassionate revision rhinoplasty surgeon, you can see an improvement to your initial result and get your confidence back. Dr. Marco A. Gonzalez is well-versed in the nuances of both primary and secondary rhinoplasty, as well as the specific needs of revision patients.
What Is
Revision Rhinoplasty?
Revision rhinoplasty, also known as secondary rhinoplasty or corrective rhinoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure that aims to remedy the appearance of the patient’s nose after a primary cosmetic rhinoplasty or functional nose surgery.
The goal of a secondary rhinoplasty is to either improve upon a lackluster surgical result or remedy a cosmetic feature of that result due to either poor healing or unsatisfactory surgical skill. The benefits of revision rhinoplasty are varied and unique to the needs of the patient but can include the following:
- Improved asymmetries, disfigurements, or unnatural aesthetics
- Improved breathing or functional issues
- Restored nasal structure
- Increased self-confidence
- Restored facial harmony
Am I a Candidate For
Revision Rhinoplasty?
If you have previously undergone rhinoplasty and dislike your surgical result, you may be a candidate. The reasons for wanting another surgery usually stem from under or over-correction by the first surgeon or poor healing. Additionally, candidates for revision rhinoplasty:
- Are generally in good health
- Do not smoke or are willing to quit
- Have reasonable expectations for results
- Desire to improve the result of their first rhinoplasty
You should note candidates for revision rhinoplasty must wait at least one year before undergoing a secondary procedure. This allows your body enough time to heal after your first surgery.
If you’re interested in revision rhinoplasty and would like to see if you may be a candidate, call Dr. G. Plastic Surgery today at (915) 600-2639 to schedule a consultation with Dr. Gonzalez.
How Is Revision Rhinoplasty Performed?
Primary rhinoplasty is considered one of the most complex cosmetic procedures–revision rhinoplasty even more so. The specifics of your procedure will depend on what Dr. Gonzalez can see of your condition during your consultation (it might not be possible to see the extent of your condition until surgery) and your goals for the procedure.
Open or Closed Revision Rhinoplasty
Whether your secondary procedure is open or closed refers to where Dr. Gonzalez places the incisions. In a closed procedure, he places the incisions inside the nostrils, so there will be no visible scarring. However, a closed revision rhinoplasty is very rare. It limits the amount of revision that Dr. Gonzalez can provide, as he will have limited visibility of the internal structures of the nose.
Open revision rhinoplasty is ideal for patients with more extensive correction or in cases where Dr. Gonzalez must be able to see the internal structures of the nose in order to remedy a cosmetic problem. Most revision rhinoplasties will require the open method, but Dr. Gonzalez is very careful to place incisions only where necessary, and most patients’ scars are very small and discreet.
Revision Rhinoplasty Grafting Techniques
Each corrective rhinoplasty procedure is unique to the needs of the patient. In some cases, grafting of natural or synthetic materials is necessary to support the nose’s structure. This may be used in cases where the primary surgery resulted in a recession of the nasal tissues or when more support is needed to restructure the nose. Cartilage grafts taken from the ear or rib or synthetic grafts may be used.
How Can I Prepare
for Revision Rhinoplasty?
The first step to your corrective procedure is your comprehensive consultation with Dr. Gonzalez. He will examine your nose and listen to your goals, concerns, and any relevant information, such as your previous recovery or surgical experiences. He will also discuss expectations for results, risks, and the surgical process.
Once you and Dr. Gonzalez decide you are a candidate and the procedure can benefit you, he will create a surgical plan that best addresses your needs. Then, he will provide you with specific instructions for preparing for your procedure, which may include:
- To stop or pause certain medications, supplements, or vitamins that can interfere with the procedure or healing process
- To quit smoking
- To get lab testing or other medical records
Although you have undergone a primary rhinoplasty and the recovery process that follows, it’s important to still be prepared for your healing period. As you know, rhinoplasty has quite a long recovery period, so the more you prepare, the better. Make plans with a responsible driver to take you home (and possibly stay with you) after surgery, take time off work, and set up any child or pet care if necessary.

What Is Recovery From Revision Rhinoplasty Like?
Your recovery from revision rhinoplasty will be similar to that of your primary procedure, but you still need to be diligent about aftercare and follow Dr. Gonzalez’s instructions explicitly. Generally, you can expect the following:
You may be sent home with a protective splint and/or packing tissue to protect your surgical site. Expect this to be a bit more substantial than your first procedure.
You will experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort immediately after your procedure. Dr. Gonzalez can prescribe some pain medication to help with this discomfort, but most patients are fine with over-the-counter medications.
Just like your first rhinoplasty, expect a long period of swelling, bruising, and tenderness. You should be up and back to normal activities after about a week, but remember to take it easy for quite some time. You will need to be careful when washing your hair and face and when applying cosmetics.
You may have to see Dr. Gonzalez again to have your packing downsized and your splints removed, which will make you much more comfortable.
Each patient’s recovery period will be different, depending on their natural healing process, the nature of their surgery, and the extent of revision. Dr. Gonzalez will provide you with specific instructions and is always available if you run into any questions or concerns during your recovery period.
What Results Can I Expect From Revision Rhinoplasty?
As you may know, it can take some time to see the final results of revision rhinoplasty. You may be able to see minor improvements in your nose about ten days after your surgery, as long as swelling and bruising have subsided and your splints have been removed–but don’t expect a huge change yet! About three weeks postoperatively, most patients see a more moderate improvement as the structures of the nose begin to strengthen.
Most patients see major improvements around the three-month mark, as most of the refinement that Dr. Gonzalez created will begin to be visible. Final results may take up to a year to be noticeable, as subtle swelling can persist.
Recovery is a journey, but you can rest easy knowing that each day, your surgical result will improve, boosting your confidence and self-esteem as you finally see the result you deserved the first time.
How Much Does Revision Rhinoplasty Cost in El Paso, TX?
The cost of corrective rhinoplasty in El Paso, TX, will depend on various factors, including the complexity of your revision, the surgical plan, anesthesia and facility fees, and whether you have combined your procedure with any other facial enhancements, such as a brow lift or eyelid surgery.
Once Dr. Gonzalez has created a surgical plan that incorporates all of these factors, he can provide you with an accurate cost estimate.
