Tattoo Removal

Tattoos are a popular permanent form of artistic self-expression. That said, not every tattoo you get is one you always want to keep. Whether it’s because of the placement, style, associated memories, or something else, many people come to regret one or more of their tattoos. Thankfully, even permanent ink doesn’t have to be truly permanent.

If you have a tattoo you no longer want on your skin, Dr. Gonzalez can help you get a fresh start with switched laser tattoo removal.

What Is
Tattoo Removal?

A tattoo is a permanent body modification where inks and pigments are injected into the dermis, or middle layer of the skin. Tattoos are permanent because, while the immune system typically removes foreign particles from the body, tattoo ink particles are too big for immune cells to grab onto and escort out of the body.

Tattoo removal is a procedure designed to remove permanent ink from your skin. Historically, several methods have been used to remove tattoos, including chemical peels, dermabrasion (polishing the outer layers of skin off), and surgical excision (cutting out the skin that contains the tattoo). Dr. G Plastic Surgery offers laser tattoo removal, a safe and effective method of breaking down the ink particles in the skin, making it easier for your immune system to remove them.

Am I a Candidate for a
Tattoo Removal
?

If you have a tattoo you would like to have removed, you may be a candidate for tattoo removal. Ideal candidates are those who:

  • Are in good health
  • Do not smoke or are willing to quit
  • Have realistic expectations
  • Are not prone to keloid scars

If you want to get a tattoo removed and want to find out if you’re a good candidate for the procedure, call Dr. G Plastic Surgery today at (915) 600-2639 to schedule a consultation. He will discuss the procedure process and possible outcomes, and help you decide if laser tattoo removal is the right course of action for you.

How Is Tattoo Removal Performed?

The Laser

Dr. Gonzalez uses a Q-Switched Yag/KTP Laser. This specialized technology switches between two types of lasers (the Yag laser and the KTP laser), allowing this single device to target both black and colored ink.

The Process

At your appointment, a picture may be taken for before and after comparison. The skin will be prepped, and numbing cream or medication will be administered.

The laser is guided over the tattoo area, targeting ink particles with pulses of light energy. As the ink particles absorb this energy, they heat up and shatter. Most patients report that this feels like being snapped by a rubber band.

Over the next few weeks, your body will naturally flush these ink particles away, making the tattoo appear lighter. Each future laser treatment removes more tattoo pigment until no more ink remains. Most tattoos require five to ten laser treatments in sessions spaced six weeks apart for complete removal.

How Can I Prepare for Tattoo Removal?

During your consultation with Dr. Gonzalez, he will discuss the risks and benefits of tattoo removal to help you determine if you can achieve your desired results with the Q-Switched laser.

Once you have determined to move forward with laser tattoo removal, Dr. Gonzalez may provide you with instructions on how to prepare. These may include the following:

  • Avoid Sun Exposure: Stay out of the sun for at least four weeks prior to your appointment. Tanned skin is prone to adverse reactions, including permanent pigment changes.
  • Arrive With Clean Skin: The area receiving laser treatment should be clean and shaved. Shower before your appointment, and do not apply creams, lotions, oils, or fragrances of any kind.
  • Avoid An Empty Stomach: Hydrate and eat before your appointment to avoid light-headedness.
  • Dress Comfortably: Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. After treatment, your skin will feel like it has been sunburned, so dress accordingly.
  • Alleviate Discomfort: Acetaminophen, or Tylenol, can help you manage discomfort. Avoid ibuprofen or aspirin, as they can cause bruising.

If you’re interested in a tattoo removal and would like to see if you may be a candidate, call Dr. G. Plastic Surgery today at (915) 600-2639  to schedule a consultation with Dr. Gonzalez.

What Is Recovery From
Tattoo Removal Like?

Swelling and skin discoloration following treatment are normal and will fade over the next few days. To soothe the treated area, ice packs and antibiotic ointment are recommended. Dr. Gonzalez will provide you with specific after-care instructions, which may include keeping the area clean, completing a course of medication if needed, and looking out for abnormal developments.

What Results Can I Expect After Tattoo Removal?

It will take multiple sessions, spaced several weeks apart, to remove a tattoo. Results vary by patient depending on various factors, including:

  • Tattoo size
  • Ink colors
  • Complexity of tattoo design
  • Location on the body

For example, areas that receive less blood flow will heal more slowly, and large, deep, dark, or colorful tattoos will require more sessions to remove. For the best results, it’s important to follow all care instructions provided by Dr. Gonzalez.

The ultimate goal of laser treatment is the complete removal of the tattoo. However, it’s important to have realistic expectations. Depending on the tattoo and your body, the tattoo may be lightened, but removing the entire tattoo may not be possible.

How Much Does Tattoo Removal Cost?

The price of tattoo removal varies depending on the factors described above. Smaller tattoos require fewer sessions than larger, more elaborate tattoos, heavy ink saturation, or hard-to-remove hues.

Dr. Gonzalez will provide complete cost details in your treatment plan.
