Saline Implants vs Silicone Implants

Saline Implants vs Silicone ImplantsThere are many considerations for a patient to have in mind when beginning their breast augmentation journey. One of the most important decisions to be made will be whether to use silicone or saline breast implants. During your consultation, your plastic surgeon will explain the differences between these types of implants and help you decide which is best for you and your aesthetic goals. Board certified plastics surgeon Dr. Marco Gonzalez provides breast augmentation surgery to patients in El Paso, TX, and surrounding locations.

Appearance and Feel

Silicone breast implants typically offer more natural-looking results, as they hang over the curvature of the breasts similar to the body’s natural fat tissue. Silicone gel also feels closer to natural fat. Saline breast implants are usually “over-filled,” and have a rounder, fuller appearance and firmer touch.

Incisions and Placement

The type of surgical incision to be made depends on the implant type, as silicone and saline implants are usually placed in different areas of the chest. Saline implants are inserted into the chest empty during surgery, then filled with the saline solution after placement is completed. Since the saline implants do not have volume at the time of insertion, small incisions can be used during surgery. Silicone implants come from the manufacturer already pre-filled with gel material and therefore require a larger incision to be placed into the chest.

Longevity

Silicone and saline breast implants are both meant to be durable and long-lasting. Both implant types are found to last about the same amount of time, and both require removal or replacement after so many years. Risk of implant rippling, rupture and capsular contracture is equal with either implant type. In the case of a ruptured implant, silicone gel can seep into the body and cause dangerous health issues. Since saline solution is easily absorbed by the body, they are safer. Your surgeon will help you decide on the best breast implants for you during your initial consultation.  Board certified plastics surgeon Dr. Marco Gonzalez provides breast augmentation surgery to patients in El Paso, TX, and surrounding locations.
